This season the JEGS ET Series Pro class had one of the closest championship points races in the last few years.  The championship came down to the final day of the season between former champion Scott Weisend and newcomer Tyler Underwood.  After the dust settled on that final day, it was Tyler Underwood taking home his first ever National Trail Raceway championship.

Tyler and his team made the decision to travel down to Trails this season and run the JEGS ET Series points and make the ET Finals team to go to Indy.  The first couple of points weekends were a success for Tyler as he was able go some rounds and the points started adding up and he found himself sitting in the top 5 in points.  In the middle of the season Tyler started thinking about, not only making the Indy team but also making a real run at the championship.  But unfortunately, he had some car trouble, and the driver made some errors which saw him slide down the points standings and saw Scott Weisend start moving up.  Going into the August points weekend, Tyler had dropped out of the top 5, but on August 21st, Tyler was able to park his car in the Winner’s Circle and picked up 93 points which catapulted him into 2nd place right behind Weisend.  Sunday, August 22nd, Tyler bowed out in the 2nd round and Weisend was able to go to the 4th round clinching the Race of Champions spot for the Indy team.   However, there was still one more weekend left in the JEGS ET Series points where Tyler could catch Scott.  On September 25th, Tyler lost in the 2nd round where Scott lost in the 3rd round giving Weisend the momentum going into the final day on Sunday.  That final day, Weisend was defeated in the 5th round, Tyler won the 5th round putting him 7 points behind, in the 6th round Tyler defeated Doug Thompson, clinching the championship for Underwood.

“This year was great! Being able to come down and race for points at National Trail Raceway and be able to come away with the championship after all the hard work this season.  The racers here have been very welcoming, and it has been great racing against some of the best racers in Ohio. After losing in the second round on that Saturday of the final weekend I thought for sure I was done and out of the championship race, but on Sunday when my cousin Michael came up told me I had just clinched the championship I was speechless,” said Tyler.  “This championship shows me that I can race any event, at any track and compete with the best.  I want to say a special thank you to my dad Fred, uncles Dan and Dave, my cousins Michael and Steven and the guy dating my sister Nick Scheckelhoff.”

Next year Tyler plans on trying to defend the title in Pro and try to put his name on a big check and go for a NHRA Wally.

Congrats to Tyler Underwood the 2021 JEGS ET Series Pro champion.
