Racing in the JEGS.com Jr. Dragster Series is one of the toughest competitions in the region. The most competitive class is the Jr. Lightning class as they are oldest age group with the fastest cars. Also making the class the largest in the Jr. Dragster Series. This year Mario Cardamone was the driver standing at the top of hill after all the points were added up.
When competing for a track championship the race is not a sprint but a marathon. The first couple of events of the year saw Mario get some round wins to start his title challenge. On June 21st, Mario took home a runner-up finish that ignited his championship charge. Over the next 5 races, Cardamone and his team picked up a win and a runner-up.
The final 3 races for Mario were the toughest, he lost 1st round each day meaning he had to wait and see if his points lead would hold up. On that final day of the season, he watched with anticipation as the only driver left that could catch him was Maddox Tanzillo. When Maddox lost in the 3rd round, the Jr. Lightning championship was all Mario’s.
“This season has been crazy for me. First off, I need to thank my Dad (Joe), mom (Lori), my crew chief Marcello, my sisters Hope, Faith and Sophia. They have been there all season for me through the ups and downs,” said Mario. “Next I need to thank my sponsors Rich South, Ralph Cardamone and Randy Groom, without sponsors we wouldn’t be where are at.”
One of the highlights of Mario’s season was winning on the same day as his good friends Wyatt Waddle and Dylan Spring.
“This championship means a lot to me. It is something that my dad and I have dreamt about for years. And it is honor to final be able to accomplish one of my major racing goals,” said Cardamone.
Next year Mario is stepping up to run High School class with his daily driver and is planning to run Pro and Sportsman as well.
Congrats to Mario Cardamone the 2020 JEGS.com Jr. Dragster Series Jr. Lightning champion!
