In 2019 one of the new classes that was introduced at National Trail Raceway was Open Comp. It gave racers a chance to race on a .500 Pro Tree and race based on their qualifying runs, where their dial-in for the night is set to .10 quicker than their quickest qualifying run. The class competed on certain JEGS Wednesday Night Drag events with a total of 5 races scheduled.
This year it was local heavy hitter Dana Thompson taking home the first ever Open Comp Championship. Dana had the help of his lovely wife, Becky Thompson, to help him all year round. During the first race of the year, Dana made it to the semi-finals but after that he never looked back. Dana racked up a win on the June 5th event after defeating Shawn Pitts and Scott Weisend to take the points lead.
On the August 28th event Dana took down 2nd in points Tanner Williams, to put even more distance between the two local racers. On the final race of the year Dana defeated, Tanner again, and clinched his first ever Open Comp Championship.
“Without the great support of my sponsors, Lucas Oil Products, Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels, Geddex, Holley Performance, DEI and Batteries Unlimited, this championship wouldn’t have been possible,” said Thompson.
Thompson is looking forward to the 2020 season where he will one again fight it out for more championships.
